New route for delivery of proteins to CNS, developer says

 
Researchers in Sweden have successfully implanted small capsules containing cells that produce a protein vital for memory and other brain functions in the brains of three patients with Alzheimer's disease. The encapsulated cell technology, according to the company that developed it, NsGene (Ballerup, Denmark), will be evaluated in a series of clinical trials for treatment of neurological disorders over the next two years.

Bird flu has made the drug a counterfeiting target

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta have developed a quick and accurate method for detecting counterfeit oseltamivir (Tamiflu). Results for the method were reported at the American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting in New Orleans in April. (Johnson K, Nyadong L, Green M, et al. Consecutive reaction monitoring desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry for rapid authentication of potentially counterfeit Tamiflu capsules.)

Matuzumab, now in clinical trials, may complement cetuximab

Two cancer drugs—one established and one still in clinical trials—bind to receptors on tumor cells in different places at the same time, raising the possibility of designing combination therapy for certain cancers, according to researchers. Cetuximab (Erbitux) is used to treat colorectal and head and neck cancer. Matuzumab is currently in phase two clinical trials for treatment of colorectal, lung, and stomach cancers. Both drugs target epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) binding sites on tumor cells.
